Simple Steps To Create Your Own Fly Screen

The summer season is near. In this case, you might also think it is practical to install a fly screen on your window. This way, fresh air can go inside but keep bugs and insects out. You can actually make one yourself. All you need to do is religiously follow the instructions. Here are the steps on how you can make fly screens for each of your windows.

To start, you have to measure the height and the width of the window opening where you will install the fly screen. You then need to add at least 4mm or 5mm to the measurements that you will get for allowance. You might find it difficult to measure the correct dimensions for old windows since most of them are not really perfect squares. Nevertheless, you still have to try getting the correct measurements.

Afterwards, you will have to prepare your hacksaw and an aluminum frame. With the use of your hacksaw, you should saw the frame in accordance to the dimensions that you have measured. A hacksaw has the ability to cut through soft metals such as aluminum. However, you will still need to check the thickness of the frame in order to determine how many number of teeth per mm should the hacksaw have in order to saw the frame. After sawing, you can remove rough edges with the help of a metal file.

Next, you have to connect the pieces that you have sawed earlier with aluminum corner inserts. Since aluminum is a soft metal, it can easily get deformed if you will apply unnecessary force to it, especially when you will already apply the mesh screen. In this case, you should make sure that you will hold it in place. To do so, you might want to lay the frame down on a plywood and temporarily nail the sides of the frame to serve as guides.

Afterwards, you will have to lay the mesh screen on top of the frame. You might have to give an allowance of one inch on all four sides just to make sure that you will still have enough material when you are about to stretch it. You should exercise caution when you will stretch the fabric out so that the frame will not get deformed and prevent waves from appearing on the mesh screen.

With a spline roller, you should press the mesh material into the gutters of the frame. The convex end of the spline roller is the one that you need to use. You must make sure that the mesh material is completely rolled in on four sides. Next, you should push the rubber spline on top of the mesh material that is already in the gutter. This rubber spline will be locking the mesh material in place on the frame. You should do so with the use of the concave end of the spline roller. After covering all sides, you should then cut the extra mesh with a sharp knife. Then, you can install the fly screen into your window.
